Winners celebrated and honoured at the 21st Annual National Transport Awards

The event held at the Westminster Park Plaza in London on 3rd October 2024 celebrated remarkable accomplishments and acknowledged the dedication, innovation, and efficiency within the UK transport industry. With 600 distinguished guests in attendance, the evening featured a keynote address delivered by Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood MP.

Local Transport Minister, Simon Lightwood MP said:-

"I was delighted to attend the National Transport Awards tonight and celebrate the fantastic achievements of our transport heroes.

Transport workers are the backbone of our economy – helping to drive growth and connect communities nationwide.

As we deliver the biggest overhaul to transport in a generation, the work of each and every driver, engineer, manager and the countless others who keep our country moving will be vital".

It was an impressive evening for Scotland's transport operators, as Lothian Buses clinched the prestigious UK Bus Operator of the Year award, while Edinburgh Trams secured the title of UK Tram Operator of the Year. McGill's Bus Group was recognised for providing the Best Bus Service with their Glasgow Nightbus.

It was also a strong showing for North West England with Liverpool City Region earning the title of Regional Transport Authority of the Year and Transport for Greater Manchester's Stockport Interchange project winning Design, Engineering & Construction Project of the Year.

Rail Operator of the Year went to MTR Elizabeth Line for the second year running. Based on the latest ORR figures, the MTR Elizabeth line has seen significant improvements in performance metrics. With a notable 40% increase in passenger journeys from October to December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, the EL continues to serve as a vital transport link in London. Despite a slight drop in punctuality and a rise in train cancellations, MTREL remains a top performer with high customer satisfaction ratings and innovative operational approaches. The introduction of new tools and software enhancements has further enhanced its operational efficiency and service quality.

The final operator category, Ferry Operator of the Year, was won by Wightlink who excel in customer satisfaction, sustainability, and community support. With impressive figures like a 96.4% customer satisfaction rate in 2023 and a market share of 54.6%, Wightlink continues to lead the way in the Solent region. Their focus on employee satisfaction, local supply chain support, and environmental initiatives sets them apart in the industry.

First Bus driver David Copley was honoured with the Frontline Employee of the Year award. David's quick thinking and brave actions led to the prevention of a potential kidnapping in Bradford city centre. His intervention, along with the support of other passengers, ensured the safety of the child involved. As a result, First Bus North & West Yorkshire has taken a stand against child abuse by supporting the NSPCC's Listen Up, Speak Up campaign.

An emotional tribute was paid to Alan Benson MBE, a remarkable campaigner and ambassador for the disabled community, who passed away in December 2023. His impactful legacy includes successful campaigns advocating for inclusive transport design. Colleague and friend Caroline Stickland, honoured Alan's memory by presenting his partner with a lifetime contribution to transport award.

Dame Bernadette Kelly, the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Transport Award, has been a pivotal figure in the transport sector. With a distinguished career that includes serving as Permanent Secretary at the Department for Transport since April 2017, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership. Prior roles as Director General in both the Rail Group at DfT and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills showcase her expertise and commitment. Honored with a Damehood and Companion of the Order of the Bath, Bernadette Kelly continues to exemplify excellence in the industry.

Exemplary Contribution to Net Zero went to the London Borough of Hackney for their Boroughwide Transport Projects. Their winning entry highlighted pioneering initiatives to reduce motor traffic and promote zero-emission vehicles. The introduction of low traffic areas, School Streets, and EV charge points demonstrates a commitment to combatting CO2 emissions from road transport. Recent data indicates a remarkable 56% traffic reduction in key areas, surpassing targets for active travel well ahead of schedule. Hackney sets a commendable example for sustainable urban development.

London Stansted picked up Airport of the Year, surpassing pre-pandemic passenger numbers with a remarkable 28.5 million passengers in the last 12 months. With an impressive 11.8% increase, Stansted leads in aircraft on-time performance (OTP) and boasts minimal on-airport delays compared to other London airports. Notably, 99% of passengers are processed in under 15 minutes for security checks, averaging less than 5 minutes. The airport also excels in passenger satisfaction at 70% and sets the standard for sustainable surface access, with 48% of passengers opting for eco-friendly transportation. Glasgow Airport received a commendation to add to their Scottish Airport of the Year title at the 2024 Scottish Transport Awards.

Anthony Smith, Chair of the Judging Panel said:

"What a 12 months! A new Government, epic weather, an upcoming budget, bus and rail reform, tough times for money people, riots, staff shortages and spiralling costs.

Through all that, transport folk have played a critical role in keeping the country's infrastructure moving smoothly. From maintaining roads and airports to ensuring buses, trains, and ferries operate efficiently, their dedication is evident. Amidst the daily challenges, they've consistently innovated, embraced diversity, and moved forward.

So, a big thank you to all the dedicated transport people who play a crucial role in keeping our nation functioning smoothly. Your hard work and commitment ensure that essential goods are delivered, people can commute to work, and the economy remains operational. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and are truly appreciated.
