INSPIRING TRANSPORT PROJECTS REWARDED AT LONDON TRANSPORT AWARDS CEREMONY

The people making a real difference to transport across London were recognised at the prestigious London Transport Awards in London last night with London Borough of Camden picking up the top award of the night for Transport Borough of the Year (pictured above). The Award for public transport operator of the year went to London Underground for the third year running whilst the award for most improved transport borough award went to Enfield. Joe Weiss, Transportation & Projects Director, City of London was also honoured for his lifetime contribution to local transport in London.

Hosted by radio and television presenter Grant Stott, the awards saw 600 transport professionals gather at the prestigious ceremony at the Novotel, West London.

There was also a special award for Outstanding Contribution to Transport across London

given to Director of Fares and Ticketing at Transport for London, Shashi Verma, to recognise his excellent work on extending the reach of Oyster on London’s national rail and river services; and on developing the next generation of fare collection solutions for London.

Transport borough of the year, Camden, has shown excellent increases in cycling with a 134% rise since 2001 and is already 2% ahead of its 2012 target to achieve a 10% cycling modal share. It is also ahead of its target to reduce motor traffic by 15% by 2011 having already achieved a 15.3% fall by 2008. Camden heavily promotes the use of car clubs, increasing members by 60% and launching the first plug-in electric car club in the UK last year. The borough has an impressive programme of high quality public realm improvements, is a key partner in the Route 38 Corridor which has delivered impressive bus and general traffic journey times. Camden’s involvement in trialling and encouraging the use of sustainable technologies and fuels is exceptional.

London Underground was presented with the award for Public Transport Operator of the Year for the third year running. London Underground achieved its highest ever customer satisfaction scores in 2008/09 and carried more passengers than ever before. Following the collapse of Metronet, two of the major line upgrades are now being managed directly by London Underground and are progressing well. It also delivered a new tube station at Wood Lane on the Hammersmith & City line and a completely rebuilt station at Shepherds Bush on Central Line in 2008.

City of London & Atkins picked up the award for Improvements to Bus Services for their Route 38 Corridor Management. The Route 38 project was impressive by its scale and by the strong results it has delivered through effective partnership with Camden, Islington, Hackney and Westminster. So far it has achieved a 28% improvement in bus journey times and a 30% improvement in general traffic journey time

Most improved transport borough Enfield was recognised for progress across a number of areas - it now has the lowest casualty figures for over 40 years and is on track to meet or exceed all casualty reduction targets by end of 2010. Enfield has reduced car journeys to school by almost 12% since 2005 – one of the largest modal shifts away from the car in London. It is also the second best performing London borough in terms of parking appeals and has reduced C02 emissions from its own fleet of vehicles by a range of initiatives.

Joe Weiss, Transportation & Projects Director, City of London was also honoured for his lifetime contribution to local transport in London. Joe has made an outstanding lifetime contribution to transport-not just in the City of London, but across the capital. He has impressed with his expertise, knowledge and vision. He retires this year leaving behind a legacy of delivery which he can be proud of.

The Most Influential Transport Achievement was awarded to Sutton Council for their Smarter Travel strategy which has dramatically changed the way people in the borough travel achieving a 50% increase in cycling, a 19% reduction in number of pupils travelling to school by car, a 13% increase in bus use, a percentage point modal shift away from car use, and a 17% reduction in on-street cycle theft.

The London Transport Awards, in association with Transport Times magazine, were judged by Transport Times publisher Professor David Begg, Chair of the Judging panel and publisher of Transport Times; Janet Cooke, Chief Executive, London Travel Watch; Nick Lester, Director of Transport, Environment and Planning, London Councils and Elsie Owusu OBE, Principal of Elsie Owusu architects and partner of Fielden & Mawson.

Peter Hendy OBE, Transport Commissioner for London said:

“Every day, TfL staff, our contractors, London’s boroughs and our other partners are working hard to meet the challenges. I strongly support these Awards and their role in marking the many achievements and the ongoing commitment of the transport industry to keeping this great city moving.”
